Bollywood finally got its saviour with Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s Brahmastra. The film was a hit at the box office. Brahmastra has now entered its fourth week and is still performing well in theatres. It managed to collect a whopping Rs 260 crore at the domestic box office. Globally, Brahmastra has crossed the Rs 400-crore mark.

Don’t Worry Darling Signals Italy’s Box Office Starting to Pick Up

Italy’s theatrical box office is finally showing some encouraging signs after long lagging behind other European countries in terms of post-pandemic returns.

“Don’t Worry Darling,” segueing from its Venice launch, opened better in Italy than in France and Germany last weekend when the Harry Styles and Florence Pugh-starrer scored €965,000 ($947,000) from Italian screens in the frame ending September 25, landing in the number two spot.  

The “Avatar” re-release weighed in at number one in Italian theaters with €1.65 million ($1.61 million), a better opening than Germany.

The same frame saw three Italian films – all Venice launches – among the top ten. Most notable of these is  Gianni Amelio’s “Lord of the Ants,” a biopic of Italian poet and playwright Aldo Braibanti, who was jailed in 1968 due to a Fascist-era anti-gay law. “Ants” has now scored a decent more than €1.4 million ($1.36 million) since bowing on Sept. 8 and briefly reaching the numero uno slot. 

In early September, during Venice, Italy’s culture ministry issued an alarming report showing that in 2022 more than 60% of the country’s population did not go to the movies. Italian admissions for the first half of this year were still down more than 50% compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019, when they reached the 100 million mark.

But shortly after the fest local motion picture association ANICA and Italy’s exhibitors launched a five-day event called Cinema in Festa offering discounted tickets at participating theaters across the country that has been a resounding success. The Sept. 18-22 initiative (modeled on National Cinema Day in the U.K. and U.S.) drew 1.2 million admissions and €4 million ($3.9 million) in box office revenue which represents a €2.2 million ($2.1 million) jump compared with the previous frame. This take is all the more significant since tickets went for €3.50 ($3.40), which is roughly half price.

“The results prove that you have to allow all sectors of the population to rediscover the cinemagoing experience,” says Valerio Carocci, head of the collective of activists and film buffs who are running Rome’s state-of the-art Cinema Troisi. He notes that “The lower price created a positive synergy between distribution and exhibition.” Carocci also points out that his collective, which is known as the Cinema America kids, had been applying this principle for years by running outdoor summer arenas that screened vintage or second and third-run movies for free before opening the Cinema Troisi exactly one year ago, on Sept. 30 2021. Cinema Troisi has become Italy’s top single screen venue with more than 55,000 admissions over the past twelve months.

To celebrate its first year in business, on Sept. 20 – a few days before Italy’s national elections at which the far-right has triumphed – Carocci organized an event during which philosopher Noam Chomsky and director Ken Loach appeared together, via video link, to discuss the lack of leadership within Italy’s left, followed by a screening of Loach’s “Riff Raff.”

“Our goal is to transform cinemas into something that goes beyond just showing first-run movies,” says Carocci, highlighting that the key to getting more people into movie theaters is “to be strongly rooted in our territory” and to “create a social network within the city.”

This has allowed Cinema Troisi to be programmed in part like a festival, with retrospectives including Pierpaolo Pasolini and Hayao Miyazaki alongside mainstream titles such as “Don’t Worry Darling,” albeit always in original language, and shows starting at 11:00 A.M. through to the midnight screenings that have become their trademark.

As for eclectic titles, among those that Carocci is particularly proud of having screened are Ninja Thyberg’s drama “Pleasure” set in the L.A. porn industry that premiered last year at Sundance and played at Cinema Troisi in August, and Gaspar Noé’s “Vortex,” starring Dario Argento and Françoise Lebrun as an elderly couple in their twilight years, that played with Noé and Argento both on hand to discuss the film with the audience on two nights.

Carocci is also glad that other movie theaters across Italy are finding new ways to lure audiences.

On Saturday Rome will see the symbolically significant grand reopening of the city’s historic Cinema Barberini, which was built in 1930 by Angelo Giuseppe Rossellini, who was Neo-realist master Roberto Rossellini’s father. The multi-screen venue in central Rome, which was shuttered in 2019 after several dead rats were found on the premises, has just been refurbished with state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos sound and plush seating. It promises to program “blockbusters, art movies, and films in original language, as well as stand-up comedy, art exhibitions, and concerts,” according to a statement.

‘Smile’ Sees $2M Previews, Harry Styles’ ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Clears $25M – Deadline

Paramount’s horror movie Smile struck up $2M in Thursday night previews that started at 7 p.m., a figure that’s just above M. Night Shyamalan’s Old from summer 2021, which did $1.5M in its previews, and just under Universal/Blumhouse’s Black Phone Thursday previews which were $3M in June.

Paramount is expecting a high-teens start this weekend, while it won’t be shocking if Smile exceeds $20M. Black Phone opened to $23.6M. Critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for the new pic stand at 78% fresh, still good for a horror film. The movie from writer-director Parker Finn sits at 82% with RT audiences, which is very good. When the movie originally was conceived, there was a possibility it would go to Paramount+, however, a rock concert test screening propelled Smile‘s fate for a theatrical release.



Universal’s Bros, the LGBTQ romantic comedy starring and co-written by Billy Eichner, made $500K from 2,700 theaters, which started showtimes at 5 p.m. The studio is only expecting a number in the high single digits this weekend.

Meanwhile, New Line’s Olivia Wilde genre pic Don’t Worry Darling ended its first week with $25.5M. The pic’s cume for the first seven days is just slightly ahead of TriStar’s first week for The Woman King, which did $25.1M at 4,113 theaters. Don’t Worry Darling posted solid weekdays: $1.66M on Monday, $2M Tuesday, $1.3M Wednesday and $1.2M Thursday. The pic is expected to decline by 55%-60% in its second weekend, around $7.7M.

Woman King made $720K on Thursday in second place, -4% from Wednesday, for a second week of $14.5M and running total of $39.7M. The Viola Davis movie was booked at 3,765 venues.

The rerelease of 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Avatar at 1,860 locations grossed $580K, -15% for a first week of $13.8M and running grand total of $774.3M — still the fourth-highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office after Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6M, 2015), Avengers: Endgame ($858.3M, 2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814M, 2021).

20th Century Studios/Disney’s Barbarian made $6.6M in Week 3 for a running total of $30.2M. Thursday at 2,865 saw $370K, -17% from Wednesday.

A24’s Pearl in Week 2 made $2.8M at 2,982 sites with Thursday at $170K, -22% from Wednesday and a running total of $7.5M.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 Box Office prediction Day 1: Mani Ratnam’s Aishwarya Rai starrer to earn a MASSIVE Rs 50-60 cr | Regional News

New Delhi: Renowned filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 1 has been released today and is garnering positive word-of-mouth reactions so far. PS I features Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trishan Krishnan and Chiyaan Vikram in lead roles and if early trade reports are anything to go by then this Mani Ratnam venture is touted to get a massive Rs 50-60 crore opening. 


According to a report in Hindustan Times, Ponniyin Selvan I had advance booking of nearly Rs 17 cr on Friday, with overseas advance booking reported to be almost Rs 10 crore. PS 1 is expected o open between Rs 30-35 crore across all languages in India. 

HT report states that an additional Rs 20 crore from overseas collections on the first day can be a huge add-on to the Box Office battle. 


The Tamil period drama is a two-part magnum opus which is written, directed and co-produced by Mani Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran under Lyca Productions. Elango Kumaravel and B Jeyamohan have co-written the film with Mani Ratnam. 

The historical drama features Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Jayaram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha in lead roles, while Prabhu, Vikram Prabhu, and Aishwarya Lekshmi appear in supporting roles. 

The film’s music is composed by AR Rahman. Ponniyin Selvan is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s historical period-based fictional novel of the same name.

PS 1 will see Ash along with south actor Karthi on the big screens. The actress plays Queen Nandini in the period drama whereas Trisha will be seen as Kundavai.

Vikram Vedha vs Ponniyin Selvan box office day 1: Mani Ratnam’s epic to outgross Hrithik-Saif’s remake with Tamil Nadu figures alone

While Vikram Vedha has registered solid advance ticket sales, the action-thriller is going to struggle to hit the Rs 15 crore mark on opening day. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan, the cops-and-robbers film is a remake of the Tamil original, starring R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi. The film’s box office potential is also being impacted by the release of director Mani Ratnam’s historical epic Ponniyin Selvan: I, which is opening to sold-out shows in Tamil Nadu as we speak.

According to Bollywood Hungama, Vikram Vedha has registered the third-biggest advance ticket sales of any Hindi film this year, behind Brahmastra and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. The film had sold almost 65,000 tickets across nationwide chains prior to its release today, according to Pinkvilla. By comparison, Brahmastra had pre-sold over 3 lakh tickets in national chains. Vikram Vedha’s all-included advance sales have crossed the 1.5 lakh mark, although by this metric, Brahmastra had pre-sold over 6 lakh tickets.

A BoxOfficeIndia report noted that Vikram Vedha is underperforming in mass belts when it comes to advance sales. But these territories typically rely more on walk-in crowds. And since Vikram Vedha is being geared toward a mass audience — and not multiplex crowds — the final day one figures can increase.

Meanwhile, Ponniyin Selvan, starring Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan among many others, is headed for a historic opening day in Tamil Nadu. Shows started as early as 1 am, Bollywood Hungama noted, and have sold out through the day. The film is expected to make more than Rs 20 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. Across languages and regions, the film is currently expected to make around Rs 40 crore, which could increase to Rs 50 crore as the day progresses. The film sold 7 lakh tickets in advance, mostly in Tamil Nadu.

This has been a difficult year at the box office for most Indian films, but especially big-ticket Bollywood spectacles. But Vikram Vedha has an in-built connection to Tamil cinema, which could help its box office appeal. The year’s highest-grossing films are KGF: Chapter 2 and RRR — both with worldwide hauls of over Rs 1,200 crore.

Not Possible To Forge Numbers

Ranbir Kapoor and Ali Bhatt starrer ‘Brahmastra’ is receiving a phenomenal response at the box office with new records every day. However, ‘Dhaakad’ actress Kangana Ranaut recently claimed that the makers of the film have shared fake collections and this was followed by a segment of social media users who have also shared their response to the ongoing debate claiming that the box office figures of the film are “fabricated”. 

Karan Johar, the producer of the film, addressed the issue at the valedictory session at FICCI Frames along with Ayan Mukerjee. Both of them discussed the journey of making Brahmastra with senior trade analyst and film critic Komal Nahta. 

Karan clarified that “It is not possible to forge numbers anymore. In these days of data tracking, one can easily cross check the numbers.” 

The filmmaker, while sharing the journey of the film, said,  “We started the journey with our prep for the film in 2015 and the film went on floors in 2017. It has been a long journey. It was so much more a labour of love and a product of passion than just a commercial outing. We are grateful for the numbers, feedback but we are thankful that we had a strong bunch of people who stood by the film all through the journey. They are people who were associated with the film from day 1.” 

“It has been challenging. There were obstacles every day even now it is challenging to take forward the second and the third franchise.” Said Ayan when asked about his take on the difficult journey of the film. 

Going back to where the journey of Brahmastra started, and responding to the question if he had envisioned a journey and a film like this, Karan said, “I had never made a film like this, we hadn’t even got ourselves associated with Bahubali then, so I couldn’t fathom that we were completely stretching ourselves, till I saw the rushes I had no idea that this is what Ayan had in his mind.” 

 Talking further about Ayan’s passion for the film, Karan commented, “After Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani it was very easy for Ayan to make another commercial film, even monetarily, churning out more films and move stratus for himself as a filmmaker but he didn’t do any of these. Where he was seven years ago economically, is where he is right now. The needles haven’t moved a bit. But the ambition, the passion I think surmounts all of that.” 

Talking about so much of criticism especially in reviews Ayan said, “Reviews do matter but ultimately the box office counts. I am still waiting for few more weeks to go, to sink in all the feedback.”  

 The two-day convention had many renowned names from the film fraternity discussing the business and magic of content.

Oscars: Can ‘Elvis’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Get Best Picture Noms?

A slew of consumer-friendly Oscar contenders are vying for nominations in the coveted best picture category — and that could be just what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences needs to boost ratings and keep ABC happy.

Analysts have found correlations between box office success and viewership over the years, but the broadcast television ratings continue to dwindle. Despite the TV Academy nominating popular series such as “Euphoria” with Zendaya and Netflix’s “Squid Game,” for example, Emmy ratings still dropped from last year. Last year’s best picture trophy went to “CODA,” an Apple streaming release that brought in $1.6 million at the box office, and while the ceremony’s ratings increased from the year prior, it was still the second lowest overall.

As it stands, Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” is the year’s biggest moneymaker and sitting comfortably in the fifth spot of the highest-grossing domestic films of all time, and part of the early awards conversation. Two tentpole sequels are waiting in the wings – Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and 20th Century Studios’ “Avatar: The Way of Water,” both of which had predecessors that were nominated for best picture.

With Oscar voters having 10 available slots to list their favorite films on their ballots, they’ve proven to be open to more consumer-facing titles such as “The Blind Side” (2009) and last year’s “Dune,” which walked away with six statuettes.

With many of the films dividing fall festival attendees aside from Universal’s “The Fabelmans,” will industry voters choose films they really love, or will they get behind “more respected” auteurs’ creative vision despite middling reviews?

More importantly, how many populist titles will AMPAS voters vote for in the 10 available best picture slots? Aside from “Maverick,” pundits are relying mostly on hopes and prayers that the Academy-at-large will recognize A24’s first $100 million movie, “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” With star Michelle Yeoh front-running in best actress and possibly other categories, like original screenplay and editing, there should be room for the Daniels’ multi-verse dramedy.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” blazed into the summer after a strong Cannes debut, making a leading man out of former Nickelodeon star Austin Butler, whose transformation into the famed musician was a tour-de-force. With over $150 million domestically, Warner Bros. is optimistic it can mimic a campaign similar to “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2018), which netted four Oscars including best actor for Rami Malek as Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury.

Getting off to a brawny start in its opening weekend, Sony Pictures’ “The Woman King” ushers powerful Black women warriors to the race with director Gina Prince-Bythewood angling to become the first Black woman ever nominated and an impeccable ensemble including Oscar-winner Viola Davis. Is there room for them in the Academy’s kingdom?

“Knives Out” sequel “Glass Onion,” which Netflix purchased the rights to for an astounding $450 million, was a smash at its premiere in Toronto, and second runner-up for the People’s Choice Award behind “Women Talking” and winner “The Fabelmans.” With its all-star cast including Daniel Craig returning as the southern detective Benoit Blanc, and stand-out turns from superstar Janelle Monáe, the Rian Johnson riot has become the streaming giant’s best shot at best picture recognition; Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Bardo,” now getting a 22-minute shorter cut for its AFI bow, stuttered early in its festival run. We’ll have to wait and see if it can bounce back with the new version.

In the expanded best picture era since 2009, the highest-grossing film of the year has been nominated for the Academy’s top category four of the last 13 years – “Avatar” (2009), “Toy Story 3” (2010), “American Sniper” (2014) and “Black Panther” (2018). Can we see the fifth this season?
