Avatar: The Way of Water passes $1 billion at global box office in record time

  • Avatar: The Way of Water has made more than $1 billion at the global box office.
  • It is one of the few films that has passed the $1 billion mark in its first two weeks of release.
  • The film has been nominated at the Golden Globes in the Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director categories.

Avatar: The Way of Water took in an estimated $82.4 million this holiday weekend in North America, pushing it past a global total of $1 billion in near record time, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday.

The four-day domestic take for the sci-fi flick brought its domestic total to $440.5 million, on top of $957 million earned overseas; only a half-dozen films have passed the $1 billion mark in their first two weeks.

But director James Cameron has estimated that the high-budget 20th Century movie needs to make twice that much just to break even. The original Avatar took in a record $2.9 billion.

The film is set more than a decade after the events of the original film and tells the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Cameron said at a global press conference ahead of the film’s release last year: “I think it’s important for a sequel to honour what the audience loved about the experience the first time, but also to get them off balance. Do things that they don’t expect.”

The film received Golden Globe nominations in the Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director categories in December.

News24’s Ilan Preskovsky, in his review, said that the sequel is a “marked improvement over its predecessor.”

“I mean, it’s still flawed to pieces and still primarily works as a visual cinematic spectacle rather than an actual piece of storytelling, but there’s a bit more heart this time around; more time spent getting to actually know.”
