Which movie do you most want to watch when Zhengzhou theaters open in an orderly manner?

Henan Daily client reporter Hu Chunna

On December 8, the reporter learned from Oscar Cinemas that theaters in the province are opening in an orderly manner, and the release dates of many films have been announced.

The sci-fi brain-burning blockbuster “2067” has been released on December 2, the much-anticipated “Avatar: The Way of Water” will be released on December 16, and the suspenseful movie “Prosperity is Coming” starring Wu Zhenyu and Ren Suxi will be released on December 23. It landed in theaters nationwide. “The Journey Backwards”, “Operation Anti-Crime”, “Above the Cliff” and the 4K restored classic film “The Spring of the Cow Herding Class” are also being screened, and viewers who like it can continue to watch.

Although the box office of domestic theaters is affected to a certain extent by the epidemic, the newly released “Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween” has a box office of over 140 million yuan so far; Since then, the popularity has remained high, and the current box office has exceeded 80 million yuan. According to data from the Maoyan and Beacon platforms, theaters across the country and in the province have resumed business one after another, and the box office is gradually picking up. The film market is expected to pick up.

According to the relevant national requirements and the announcement of Zhengzhou’s epidemic prevention and control measures, you can no longer check the negative nucleic acid test certificate when entering the theater. While the major theaters have resumed business one after another, they are actively doing a good job of disinfecting, and movie fans can watch movies in an orderly manner under the premise of personal protection.

Look for this year’s box office hero in our story of salvation

Emily Lopez is the lead consultant for adult evangelization.

by Emily Lopez

This time of year offers an abundance of festive family activities — Christmas light displays to see, parish Advent celebrations to attend and the latest action-adventure movie to watch in the theater.

Although an interesting menu of movie choices is often available, the Hollywood production companies seem to save their very best for the holiday season. These companies recognize that there is something powerful about the holidays, even if they may be motivated toward capitalizing on it financially.

In recent years, this season has found the lights dimming on the latest and greatest superhero film. The spotlight seems to pivot between Marvel and DC Comics in an ongoing effort to garner the top box office position.

However, this year, there was a new hero in town . . . quite literally. “The Chosen” season three was released to box offices on Nov. 18, opening in the No. 3 position.

The interest in a seemingly mundane story with no major celebrity actors has raised curiosity among many. Stories covering the release describe it as an “unexpected success” with an “overwhelming response” that is being embraced by even the “most secular critics.”

And that is the power of Jesus.

To know the story of salvation is to recognize the power of God to overwhelm even the most jaded heart.

When we share our personal witness with others we are often met with an unexpected response. Allowing the Holy Spirit to move through us as a conduit of Christ’s love and mercy will always result in “surprise success.”

The preparation for Christmas looks different in our lives because we are a Christian people. We know that we were created for a personal relationship with God and others.

We recognize the value in creating moments of anticipation and thanksgiving through the season of Advent because we know the true gift.

There is nothing we have done nor can do to deserve the gift of Christ. He has come to save us from sin that we cannot overcome. An undeserved gift to redeem us from ourselves — from our prideful ambition to believe we could be more if we separated ourselves from God.

Christ came into the world as a vulnerable human being to be tortured and killed as an innocent victim; and he continues to offer himself every time we celebrate Mass in the Eucharist.

Just as we continue to pridefully choose distance from God, Jesus continues to offer his unconditional love and mercy. As we prepare through this holiday season, let us make time to renew our hearts in his love.

Let us reflect on the value of our story, the purpose of our hero and the response of our lives to the greatest gift ever given.

Box Office: Drishyam 2 is top grossing film of last week, Bhediya follows, An Action Hero is low :Bollywood Box Office

It was Drishyam 2 all the way as it continued to bring in best numbers amongst all others in the running, including holdover release Bhediya and new release An Action Hero. In fact Bhediya was also collecting more than An Action Hero but more about that later.

Box Office Drishyam 2 is top grossing film of last week, Bhediya follows, An Action Hero is low

Talking about Drishyam 2, the film kept bringing in collections in the range of Rs. 2-3 crores during the weekdays and while a haul of over Rs. 3 crores from Monday to Thursday would have enhanced the collections even better, there is an open week ahead where it will add on good moolah, which otherwise wouldn’t have come in had there been any major release. Currently, the film stands at Rs. 196.25 crores* and by tomorrow it will hit the double century. In fact there is some good jump witnessed then it could well go past Golmaal Again (Rs. 205.70 crores) lifetime as well during this time.

Meanwhile, Bhediya stayed on the lower side during the weekdays and brought in around Rs. 3 crores more. The film now stands at Rs. 55 crores* and while Rs. 60 crores would come in during its lifetime, that would be about it for the creature comedy. The film deserved to enter the Rs. 100 Crore Club and while that hasn’t come in, at the very least it should have hit the Rs. 80 crores mark. Rest assured, it will find some good traction coming its way when it arrives on OTT.

As for An Action Hero, in the hindsight it could well have debuted straight on the OTT. It did have an interesting promo and back then it did seem that the film will actually open well, but neither did the film get an opening, nor growth over the weekend and then there wasn’t much over the weekdays as well. As a result, the film currently stands at Rs. 8.50 crores* and the lifetime will unfortunately stay under the Rs. 10 crores mark. This is yet another instance of a good movie just not fetching attention of the audiences.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources

Son of a Beach S1E3: FIFA World Cup 2022 brings fans together, Will Smith makes first TV appearance following Oscars slap, Black Panther breaks box office records & more

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is underway and many fans from across the world have come together to cheer on their favorite teams. As of Nov. 30, Netherlands and the United States, Argentina and Australia, France and Poland, England and Senegal are confirmed to face off starting Dec. 3. So many historic moments are also occurring at the World Cup. Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo representing Portugal scored a goal in his fifth World Cup making him the first person to do so. Also, Stéphanie Frappart is set to make history as the first woman to referee a men’s World Cup match. Alongside assistants Neuza Back from Brazil and Karen Diaz from Mexico, the Frenchwoman will form part of an all-female refereeing trio officiating Costa Rica vs. Germany in their Group E match.

On a Nov. 28 episode of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, actor Will Smith appeared and made his first TV appearance following his infamous Oscars moment when he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage following Chris’ comments about Smith’s wife Jada, causing an uproar on social media. With that aside, Smith appeared in his first TV broadcast since then to promote his upcoming film “Emancipation”.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” released in theaters on Nov. 11 and devoured the box office, earning $180 million in its opening weekend. It also broke the record for a November opening in North America, soaring past the previous high-water mark of $158 million set by 2013’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” earning $150 million, according to Variety. Continuing the story of Wakanda, director Ryan Coogler changed the script following the death of lead actor Chadwick Boseman in 2020. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” pays tribute to the actor through his character, King T’Challa, and is an emotional ride.

“Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday”… That song is the first thing I think of when talking about “Wednesday”, Netflix’s latest hit TV show. While attending Nevermore Academy, Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega, attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a killing spree and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago. The show premiered on Nov. 23 and has received attention because of creator Tim Burton’s clever comedy and horror sequence. It’s only been a week since its release and “Wednesday” is already breaking records.

Guest host Renzo Pocasangre introduces a new segment titled “Sound Waves”, a new part of Son of a a Beach which brings reviews on the newest music.

Guest host Rosaura Montes discusses her featured film of the week in a segment called “Going to the Movies with Rosie”.

A Curtain Puller at Drama Clubs Once Controlled 50% of India’s Box Office Collections

Jamshedji Framji Madan — the Parsi business person, film magnate and owner of Madan Theatres, who at one point controlled more than 50% of box office collections during India’s silent film era — started his career in the entertainment business as a curtain puller for an amateur drama club.

From curtain puller, he went on a remarkable journey which saw him introducing a whole new medium of entertainment for the Indian public. In his rich career, he built a network of cinema halls, cinema tents and a movie distribution and production business responsible for more than 100 silent films and ‘talkies’ in the nascent years of the Indian film industry. (Above images courtesy Wikimedia Commons)

Starting out as Elphinstone Bioscope Company in 1902, Madan Theatres at one point became the largest filmmaking, distributor and theatre business in India. Besides bringing the early film business to Calcutta, Madan Theatres is said to have also controlled 127 theatres at its peak.

Drama — Madan’s first love

JF Madan was born on 27 April 1856 in Navsari, Gujarat, and grew up in relative prosperity in Bombay (Mumbai) before his father endured financial ruin owing to substantial money he lost in a land scheme.

This compelled a young Madan to find work early on and he joined an amateur drama club, Elphinstone Natak Mandali, as a curtain puller and then an actor in 1868. Madan was a natural on stage and travelled the length and breadth of India with the drama club.

In his late twenties, he decided to start his own business as a wine merchant and general provisions supplier and moved to Calcutta (Kolkata).

Success in business meant that he became a leading supplier of liquor and provisions to the British Indian Army. But he used the profits generated from his businesses to produce plays, build dance and theatre halls, playhouses and even bought the famous Corinthian Theatre and Alfred Theatre in Calcutta.

At the turn of the 20th century, movies from the West were being shown to audiences in India. Seeing an opportunity, he established the Elphinstone Bioscope Company (a precursor to Madan Theatres) to exhibit foreign films in the city.

“As early as 1902, he bought cinema equipment from an agent of the Pathe company [in France] and began organising ‘bioscope’ showings in tents pitched at various key locations in Calcutta. As his business began to prosper, Madan realised the need to have permanent locations so that he could expand and consolidate his business for exhibition of films,” wrote Karan Bali for Upperstall.com, an independent platform covering cinema in India.

According to Devasis Chattopadhyay, a columnist and communications specialist writing for Live History India, Madan also began producing and exhibiting a series of silent movies including ‘Great Bengal Partition Movement: Meeting and Procession’ by Jyotish Sarkar in 1905.

In 1907, he built India’s first purpose-built cinema hall, the Elphinstone Picture Palace in Kolkata (recently demolished as Chaplin Theatre) for exhibition of the films he acquired. According to Bali, “He then expanded by building a chain of such picture halls and within a short period, Madan’s empire extended across India, Burma and Ceylon [Sri Lanka],” wrote Bali.

Another major milestone came in 1911 when Madan filmed the IFA Shield football final in Kolkata between the legendary Mohun Bagan Football Club and an all-English football team. This was the first time a sporting event in India was filmed.

About two years later in 1913, however, the penny dropped for Indian cinema as the legendary Dadasaheb Phalke released India’s first indigenously made feature film, Raja Harishchandra. This opened the floodgates of locally-made cinema.

In 1917, Madan also jumped on this bandwagon and produced silent films like Satyavadi Raja Harishchandra, an abridged version of Phalke’s pioneering film. This was also the first full-length feature film to be shot in Calcutta.

To supplement his coffers, he also acquired the exclusive rights to exhibit Pathé Frères films, a major French film equipment and production company, in the Indian subcontinent.

But the period during 1914 and 1918 (World War I) also saw him thrive in his other business as a supplier of provisions to the British Indian Army. In 1918, he was even awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services in the war.

A year later, he launched India’s first first ever corporate filmmaking company. According to Devasis Chattopadhyay, he took his Parsi theatre, mimicry production and silent filmmaking businesses and established the Madan Theatres Limited. It was officially incorporated on 27 September 1919 and was registered with the Registrar of Companies in Calcutta.

“Madan Theatres Ltd began its filmmaking journey with Bilwamangal (1919). The film was directed by Rustomji Dotiwala and starred Dorabji Mewawala in the title role alongside a popular stage actress, Miss Gohur, playing the temptress, Chintamani,” wrote Bali.

“Thought to be lost forever as Madan lost almost all of their films in a major fire, about 20-odd minutes of the film have been miraculously traced out and  given to the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) from the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris. The footage shows that Bilwamangal had a rather sophisticated art direction for the time and includes among other scenes, Bilwamangal arguing with his father and a dance by Chintamani,” he added.

Until the Wall Street Crash of 1929, his company Madan Theatres became the largest filmmaking, distributor and theatre business in India. They were the first exhibitors of talkies in India. In 1931, just months after Ardeshir Irani directed and produced India’s first ever talkie Alam Ara, Madan Theatres produced the first Bengali talkie, Jamai Sashthi

A year later, the company produced Indra Sabha, a film directed by his third son JJ Madan, which till this day holds the world record for most songs in a single film at 71.

“Going by popular trends, most of the Madan films were mythologicals but they did explore the odd fantasy or social subject as well. Initially, their artists came from the stage, the lead actresses were usually Anglo-Indian girls who took Indian pseudonyms,” wrote Bali.

Demise and downfall

However, he died before witnessing these milestones on 30 June 1923.

What’s worse is that six years after his death, the film production empire he built suffered massively due to the Wall Street Crash. By the mid 1930s, his theatre network and a massive chunk of his film business were gone. In 1937, Madan Theatres produced its last film before shutting down for good.

JF Madan was a pioneer of India’s film industry, but remains forgotten today even by the city of Calcutta (Kolkata), for whom he gave so much.

But, according to the Madan Theatres Research Group, “Today Madan Street in central Kolkata still honours JF Madan’s philanthropy, which included considerable donations to Calcutta’s poorest people and the Parsi community. A few topical films survive and the NFAI have successfully recovered parts of two Madan-produced feature films. With the single-screen era now over, but interest in the origins of Indian film growing by the day, work is underway to better record and preserve this important period in the country’s history.”

the calm before the Avatar storm

black panther: wakanda forever, trailer, views, 24 hours

This week sees the highly anticipated release of… nothing! In the lead up to Avatar: The Way of Water it seems all other studios have decided to play it safe and not even attempt one big weekend before dropping significantly next week.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to see. If you live in an area with some Indie theaters (basically New York or Los Angeles) you may be able to see the limited releases of Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale starring a soon to be Oscar Nominated (if the buzz is true) Brendan Fraser (for the rest of us normal folk, we have to wait until December 21 before the film goes wide). Or perhaps the Sam Mendes film Empire of Light is more your speed, if you can find a theater that is playing it. Or maybe, just maybe, you have been eagerly anticipating the release of a PG rated version of the Mark Wahlberg film Father Stu this time called Father Stu: Reborn? Although, I kind of doubt an edited down version of a film that opened to just over $5 million on its way to just under $21 million will make any impact on this week’s box office!

The rest of us will just have to make do with the holdovers. Perhaps this is the weekend you finally get out and catch up on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which should take first place for a fifth week with around $13 million. The last movie to hold the top spot on the charts for 5 weeks was Top Gun: Maverick but that wasn’t consecutive, it had a 13 week gap in-between first place finishes (where it became the first movie to ever top the charts on both Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend.)

If you are in the festive spirit, I’d recommend checking out Violent Night as it is exactly what you’d expect from that title! It has been described as Die Hard meets Home Alone and I can’t think of a better comparison than that, so I won’t! In his review for the film, David Arroyo declared that he loved every minute of the movie. I know that right now there are a million and one new Christmas movies out on the various streaming services, and I can save you the hassle of watching them: the girl and the guy fall in love right as the clock strikes midnight on Christmas as the snow begins to fall! But in theaters, there is only Violent Night to whet your yuletide whistle (that sounded dirtier than I intended it to!) With only another 2 full weeks before Christmas arrives (2 weeks and 3 days to be exact), this one should continue pulling in solid numbers. This weekend should see an over $8 million haul.

A full trailer and two posters have been unveiled for the darkly comedic thriller The Menu, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes.

The rest of the top 5 should be filled out with Disney’s massive bomb Strange World. The good news for that one is it has maintained small week to week drops, the bad news is: that’s because it opened so horribly a few weeks back! While fifth place will be a dog fight between The Menu and Devotion. Both films are quite excellent (check out the reviews by Chris Bumbray for Menu here and Devotion here) but I think the edge will go to the one with the shorter runtime, which at 107 minutes is The Menu (Devotion clocks in at 139 minutes).

The only new addition to the top ten this week will probably be the Michael Showalter directed Spoiler Alert which launched last week in six theaters to a little over $83,000. This week sees its theater count upped to around 750 screens. The question will be if audiences will want to spend time watching a film where the entire premise is that one of the main characters dies from cancer?! And that isn’t a spoiler, the film is based on the book Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies. Reviews have been decent (including this one from our own JimmyO) saying that the film is a bit uneven but the performances are strong. Plus I like seeing people like Jim Parsons in roles that aren’t the type they are known for and this role seems about as far away from Sheldon from Big Bang Theory as you could get.

Will you be making it out to theaters this weekend or will the Apple+ release of Emancipation be all you need? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever- $13 Million
  2. Violent Night- $8.5 Million
  3. Strange World-  $3 Million
  4. The Menu- $2.5 Million
  5. Devotion- $2 Million

‘Avatar The Way of Water’ Is Setting Box-Office Records In India Ahead Of It’s Release. Here’s How

Even though ‘Avatar The Way of Water’ is nine days away from the theatrical release in India but the film is already breaking records at the box office. As per reports, The James Cameron film has crossed Rs. 10-crore mark in nett collections from advance bookings on Monday evening in India. The figure breaks the mark set by ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ earlier this year.

‘Avatar The Way of Water’ is the sequel to the 2009 hit ‘Avatar’, which remains the highest-grossing film in the world. The film is the second in a planned five-film franchise and will release worldwide on December 16. Advance booking for the film opened in India last week due to the high buzz around it.

As per a report by BoxOfficeIndia.com, the film saw the fastest advance in the history of Indian cinema, crossing ₹10 crore by close of business on Monday night, ten days before release. The report said that Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness hit the 10-crore nett mark nine days before release. The Rs. 10-crore figure for Avatar 2 is for all days for which booking is open right now (the first weekend).

Avatar The Way of Water brings back Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver from the first film while also adding Kate Winslet this time around. The first reactions to the film came out recently with most critics praising it and calling it a visual masterpiece.

In previous interviews with ew, Cameron said that he began planning the sequel by himself in 2012, bringing in a writing team in 2013 who helped outline four stories that would stretch across Pandora’s diverse geography and continue the first film’s tale of man versus nature. Filming on Avatar 2 (an official title has yet to be announced) started in 2017, with a story set about 14 years after the original: Former human soldier Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) have settled down and started a family, and much of the film centers on their preteen offspring.
