After a mammoth start to his Premier League career for Manchester City, Erling Haaland is looking good to smash several records this campaign alone.
Back in May 2021, with the imminent departure of the club’s record goal-scorer, Sergio Aguero, City manager Pep Guardiola said, with tears streaming down his face: “We cannot replace him”.

Little did we know that it would be nearly every other manager in the Premier League who would have tears in their eyes at the sight of who actually did end up replacing him.
Not only have they found the centre-forward that this side has been itching for, they’ve also signed a player who looks to be a cyborg who eats heart and liver as part of his 6000-calorie diet, and whose only purpose is to score goals at any cost.
Having played 13 matches this season in all competitions, here are some of the records Haaland has already broken, some that he’ll be aiming to break, and the incredible goal tally he could mathematically reach.
What records has he broken so far?
In England’s top flight, Erling Haaland is:
The quickest player to score 15 goals in the Premier League (in nine games) – beating Andy Cole who did it in 15.
The fastest player to score in his first four away games in the Premier League.
Of course he’s already broken Champions League records over the past few seasons, including:
Fewest games to reach 10, 15 and 20 goals
Youngest player in the Champions League to score 25 goals
Only player to score more than one goal on his Champions League debut for three different clubs
What records will he be going for?
If somehow, his goal-scoring rate can remain at 1.67 goals per game, based on his first nine league appearances, the Norwegian would be projected to score about 63 goals in one Premier League campaign.
This would absolutely annihilate Mohamed Salah’s tally of 32 goals in the 2017/2018 season. It would even beat Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s 34 goals back in the era of 42-match leagues.
While reaching a figure in the sixties is unlikely, the way Haaland is playing in combination with Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden, anything is possible.

Pep Guardiola even conceded that “he is one of the best” strikers he has coached, and his priceless reaction to his goals against Copenhagen in last week’s Champions League thrashing says everything you need to know – pointing to his number nine in disbelief at how easy he makes it all look.
Keep in mind, this is someone who coached Robert Lewandowski and arguably the greatest player ever, Lionel Messi.
What is definitely possible, though, and perhaps more realistic, is beating that Salah record – given he’s already halfway to thirty in October. Haaland has about six months and 29 fixtures to score 17 more goals.
Outside of England, If he were to get over 50, he’d be beating Lionel Messi’s record for most goals scored in a season in the top five leagues (La Liga).
Looking even further, he could make a case for the most goals scored in one calendar year, which is also held by Messi with 91 goals in 2012.

However, football is loaded with variables and circumstances that can change Haaland’s rampaging course to Premier League legend status.
However, when the variables align so perfectly, an absolute blowout for the records must be considered a real chance. The robot that is Haaland fits Pep Guardiola’s machine-like Manchester City system like clockwork.
Being the side that creates the most goal-scoring opportunities in the league and having a hungry Haaland up front is almost a certain recipe for success.
Haaland faces Jurgen Klopp’s struggling Liverpool this Monday (AEDT) in what could be a make-or-break for the Reds. Some might even argue this is the first true test for the Norwegian. It will certainly be a match to savour, riddled with narratives and key individual battles across the pitch.
Can his goal-scoring form continue? Only time will tell.
