In recent years, if there’s one genre that has dominated the box office, it is undoubtedly superhero movies. Marvel and DC continue to rake in large amounts of money by making movies that are filled with CGI and iconic comic-book characters. Even though the genre of superhero movies continues to flourish and big filmmakers are jumping on the bandwagon to make a superhero film, iconic director Quentin Tarantino doesn’t seem to be too keen to make a superhero project.
Tarantino, who is known for making legendary movies such as ‘Reservoir Dogs’, ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘Kill Bill’ and more, has opened up about directing movies from the genre mentioned and revealed why he will never be making a Marvel movie. While answering the question, the ‘Inglorious Bastards’ filmmaker called directors of superhero movies “hired hands” and the reason he will never direct a Marvel movie is that he is “not looking for a job.”
He added, “You have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.” The award-winning director also alleged that modern filmmakers “can’t wait” for the hype around superhero movies to die off. He also compared the current superhero mania to the obsession that big studios had with musical adaptations in the ’60s. Tarantino told Los Angeles Times, “The analogy works because it’s a similar chokehold. The writing’s not quite on the wall yet. The way it was in 1969 when it was, ‘Oh, my God, we just put a bunch of money into things that nobody gives a damn about anymore.”
As soon as Tarantino’s comments surfaced online, social media went berserk and started to give their opinions on the filmmaker’s statement. A lot of people were in favor of what he said while others believed that Tarantino wouldn’t even make a good superhero film if given a chance to direct one.
One of the social media users wrote, “He is absolutely right. Marvel directors are just pawns, with rare exceptions.” Another user wrote, “He’s right. MCU directors are hired to follow a formula and story that mostly comes out of Feige’s head. Tarantino makes his own movies that’s why he’s one of the best.” Meanwhile, a lot of people criticized him for his comments and said that he was just jealous because people superhero movies connect more with the audience than his movies. The user noted, “They are just jealous the MCU connects more with the audience than their “prestige” movies. So, they keep talking hoping fans will choose them over the MCU.”

He’s right. MCU directors are hired to follow a formula and story that mostly comes out of Feige’s head. When the director wants to do their own thing, what happened with Scott Derrickson and other artists occurs. Tarantino makes his own movies that’s why he’s one of the best!

“I’m really sick of these big names acting as if Marvel were just not good enough to deserve the success it has accomplished. Like, dude, it’s not about you needed the job or not, or being a “hired hand,” it’s about them respecting your work so much, that they want you,” wrote another user.

On the other hand, one user asked the journalists to stop asking big filmmakers about Marvel and DC. The user wrote, “Oh, for god’s sake. Stop asking him about Marvel and DC.”
This is not the first time a big filmmaker has criticized Marvel or DC. Martin Scorsese believes that Marvel movies don’t necessarily do a great job of conveying “emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.” On the other hand, Francis Ford Coppola feels that Marvel movies are simply “despicable.”
Even with so much criticism, Marvel continues to garner a lot of money whenever a movie is released and most of Marvel’s movies manage to cover the cost of production within 10 days of their release. So, it seems audiences are still favoring Marvel and that’s what the production house needs.
