Marvel Zombies is under production at Marvel Studios and Disney+. The series is a spin-off of What If…? Zombies, an episode of Marvel’s animated anthology series, taking place in an alternate timeline wherein the Avengers must fight off the consequences of a zombie apocalypse. The show is already gaining much attention from elated fans who wish to see their favorite superheroes turn into flesh-eating monsters.
However, the spin-off wouldn’t be a long series, which may disappoint certain sections of fans. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Marvel Zombies executive producer Zeb Wells talked about the show and revealed the episode count of the upcoming series. Marvel Zombies, it turns out, will be the shortest MCU Disney+ original with only four episodes.
It’s four episodes, not sure when it comes yet, but it’s looking really cool.
Zeb also shared his first impressions when he first learned about the spin-off being greenlit. Zeb wasn’t associated with the What If…? episode, but he says that it was what excited him to sign up for the spin-off.
I did not do [the Zombie episode] but I’m doing the spin-off. So it’s not out yet. But I love that episode too, so when I got the call that they were going to do a spin-off from that episode, I was like ‘oh yeah, let’s do it.
This will make Marvel Zombies the shortest venture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The short series I Am Groot was the shortest of all MCU Disney+ originals, comprising five episodes. Interestingly, Marvel Zombies will be rated TV-MA, equivalent to R-ratings for films. Meaning the show will take the audience into the more brutal and bloodily violent side of the said zombie apocalypse.
Marvel Zombies Feature a Freshly Enticing Set of Characters
Marvel Zombies will tap into the new characters’ place in the zombie apocalypse. The What If…? episode featured the original Avengers, including Iron Man, Hawkeye, Captain America, and Hulk, alongside characters like Falcon, Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch, and Spider-Man.
But, the spin-off will also feature the newer characters from the MCU dealing with their friends turned foes. The line-up includes characters like Ghost, Okoye, Abomination, Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, and Captain America, all of whom will take zombie forms. These characters will be joined by apocalypse survivors Shang-Chi, Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Death Dealer, Red Guardian, and Jimmy Woo. A snippet also confirmed that the Eternal Ikaris would also appear as a half-zombie creature, which will be an exciting take to watch.
There are no details about the show’s episodes’ run-time. But usually, in a miniseries format, Marvel Studios has opted for a 40-50 minute run-time, such as in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Ms. Marvel, and Moon Knight. However, there’s no telling how long the animated installment will run, as Marvel Studios may not want to drag the story just for a longer run time.
Marvel Zombies will release in 2024, but an exact release date is yet to be announced. The show will be an alternate universe story adjunct to the MCU and will probably feature the actors from the live-action productions voicing their counterparts.
