- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The JMSDF Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion is a heavy-lift transport helicopter that has been in service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) since the early 2000s. The aircraft has been operated by Air Development Squadron 51, based at Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Kanagawa, Japan.
- The CH-53E Super Stallion was developed in the United States by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation and is a larger and more powerful version of the CH-53D Sea Stallion. It is equipped with three General Electric T64-GE-416 engines, which give it a maximum speed of around 290 km/h and a range of over 1,500 km.
- Sea Dragons are used primarily for Airborne Mine Countermeasures (AMCM), with secondary missions of vertical shipboard delivery and assault support. But they can also pick up the slack for Seahawks when it comes to other roles such as assault support. Sea Dragons can deliver up to 55 personnel to a landing zone or carry heavy loads: up to 16 tons for 50 nautical miles or 10 tons for 500 nautical miles.
- The MH-53E was derived from the CH-53E Super Stallion and is heavier and has a greater fuel capacity than its ancestor. The MH-53 can operate from carriers and other warships and is capable of towing a variety of mine hunting/sweeping countermeasures systems, including the Mk 105 magnetic minesweeping sled, the AQS-14A side-scan sonar, and the Mk 103 mechanical minesweeping system. When performing the assault support mission, the MH-53E can be fitted with the GAU-21 50-cal. machine gun ramp-mounted weapon system.
- The JMSDF’s CH-53Es have been primarily used for transport and logistics, as well as for search and rescue operations. They have been involved in a number of humanitarian aid missions, including providing aid to victims of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
- The CH-53E has also been used in a number of international peacekeeping operations, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. In Iraq, the aircraft was used to transport personnel and equipment, as well as to support ground troops in combat operations. In Afghanistan, the CH-53E was used to transport supplies and troops, as well as to provide medical evacuation and search and rescue support.
- Overall, the JMSDF Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter has proven to be a reliable and versatile aircraft, serving the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force well in a variety of roles and operations.
