The series is famous for its fractured continuity. Each reboot or sequel chooses which films still count, so there are five distinct paths through the franchise.
The original run
1978 · 1981 · 1988 · 1989 · 1995Carpenter’s original introduces Michael Myers, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence). Halloween II moves the carnage to the hospital and makes Laurie Michael’s sister. Parts 4 and 5 follow Laurie’s daughter Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris), and The Curse of Michael Myers brings in the Cult of Thorn, with Paul Rudd in an early role.
The anthology experiment
1982Halloween III: Season of the Witch leaves Michael out entirely. Carpenter and Debra Hill wanted an annual anthology built around the holiday. It underperformed, and the studio brought Michael back.
H20 timeline
1998 · 2002H20 ignores parts 4, 5 and 6. Curtis returns as Laurie, now living under an assumed identity as a boarding-school headmistress. Resurrection follows, with early-2000s reality TV and webcams.
Rob Zombie’s remakes
2007 · 2009Zombie reboots the series with a grittier, more violent take that digs into Michael’s childhood.
The Blumhouse trilogy
2018 · 2021 · 2022Halloween, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, directed by David Gordon Green. The trilogy continues only from the 1978 original, and Michael and Laurie are no longer related.
